چکیده

We present a method, based on the kinematic analysis of the Galactic disk stars, to clarify whether the internal motions of the stellar system in spiral arms follow those expected in the density wave theory. The method relies on the comparison with the linear relation between the phases of spatial positions and epicyclic motions of stars, as drawn from the theory. The application of the method to the 78 Galactic Cepheids near the Sun, for which accurate proper motions are available from the Hipparcos Catalogue, has revealed that these Cepheids hold no correlation between both phases, thereby implying that their motions are in contradiction with the theoretical predictions. Possible reasons for this discrepancy are discussed and future prospects are outlined. Subject headings: Galaxy: kinematics spiral arm density wave Hipparcos

The Effect of Spiral Structure on the Stellar Velocity Distribution in the Solar Neighborhood

Clumps in the solar neighborhood’s stellar velocity distribution could be caused by spiral density waves. In the solar neighborhood, stellar velocities corresponding to orbits that are nearly closed in the frame rotating with a spiral pattern represent likely regions for stellar concentrations. Via particle integration, we show that orbits can intersect the solar neighborhood when they are exci...

The saturation of disk heating in the solar neighborhood and evidence for a merger 10 Gyrs ago

We reexamine the age-velocity dispersion relation in the solar neighborhood using improved stellar age estimates that are based on Hipparcos parallaxes and recent stellar evolution calculations. The resulting relation shows that the Milky Way stellar disk was relatively quiescent, suffering little heating or dispersion increase between 3 and 10 Gyrs. However, at an age of 10 Gyrs there is an ab...

The saturation of disk heating in the solar neighborhood and evidence for a merger 9 Gyrs ago

0 Spiral Structure Parameters in the Solar Neighbourhood

Two samples of O-and B-type stars and Cepheids with Hipparcos data have been used to characterize galactic rotation and spiral arm kinematics in the solar neighbourhood. An extensive set of simulations has been performed in order to assess the capabilities of the method and its sensitivity to sample errors and biases in the adopted parameters.

Stellar Populations in the Central Galaxies of Fossil Groups

It is inferred from the symmetrical and luminous X-ray emission of fossil groups that they are mature, relaxed galaxy systems. Cosmological simulations and observations focusing on their dark halo and inter-galactic medium properties confirm their early formation. Recent photometric observations suggest that, unlike the majority of non-fossil brightest group galaxies (BGGs), the central early-t...
